U.S. peace negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner presented several “decent ideas” during talks on how to end the war with Russia, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday.
Witkoff and Kushner visited both Russia and Ukraine over the weekend and held several hours of talks with Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
But the meetings failed to deliver a breakthrough on how to end the war, now in its fifth year.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told Axios that he believes the United States is pushing for a de-escalation of the war.
Zelensky said he believes Russian President Vladimir Putin needs President Trump and is therefore reluctant to risk upsetting him.
He also said he believes Washington could use its influence to pressure Moscow to de-escalate the conflict.
The U.S. is exploring whether Ukraine and Russia could take steps to de-escalate the war during the winter while restarting negotiations toward a broader peace agreement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told Axios in an interview Monday.

“My feeling [is] that Putin needs Trump,” Zelensky said. “He doesn’t want … to upset him.”
Zelensky said that even if Putin doesn’t want to de-escalate, he could be pressured by the Trump administration to do so.
When asked whether Putin might want to give Trump a diplomatic win before the U.S. elections, Zelensky replied: “Yeah.”
