The unusual race has drawn Trump’s attention, with the president accusing Democrats of trying to confuse Alaska voters and saying they are treating them “with contempt.” Trump has urged voters to select “SULLIVAN, DAN S. — REGISTERED REPUBLICAN/INCUMBENT,” making clear which candidate he supports.
The intervention comes as Alaskans prepare to head to the polls Tuesday in a Senate contest that could help determine the balance of power in Congress.
Two-term Republican Senator Dan S. Sullivan is seeking another term, but voters will also see Dan J. Sullivan, a retired fifth-grade teacher and self-described “moderate Republican,” on the ballot.
The unusual match-up has prompted allegations from the incumbent and the president that the challenger is attempting to confuse voters. Trump had already sounded the alarm on Friday, accusing Democrats of orchestrating the situation.
