Illegal Alien Released Into US Under Biden Charged In Fatal DUI

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer with officials in Indiana seeking to prevent the release of a Honduran national charged in connection with a fatal DUI hit-and-run in Indianapolis.
According to DHS, the crash occurred September 26 when a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed struck another vehicle. The first vehicle then drove through a gas station parking lot, where it struck and killed 33-year-old Tamara Renee Thomas. The driver fled the scene following the crash.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department later arrested Edwin Alexander Sosa-Gonzalez, whom DHS identified as an illegal alien from Honduras. He was charged with operating while intoxicated causing death, leaving the scene of a vehicle accident that caused death or catastrophic injury, and leaving the scene of a vehicle accident resulting in death.
An investigation revealed that a vehicle was travelling at a high rate of speed southbound on Tibbs Avenue approaching 16th Street before striking another vehicle.
The crash caused the striking vehicle to cross traffic and drive through a gas station parking lot before hitting a woman walking in the parking lot.
The victim’s family confirmed to FOX59/CBS4 that she was 33-year-old Tamara Renee Thomas.
The driver of the striking vehicle fled the scene; IMPD said in a later release an adult male was arrested for his role in the crash.
ICE lodged a detainer for Sosa-Gonzalez with the Marion County Jail on September 27.
DHS said Sosa-Gonzalez has a prior criminal history in Indianapolis. In February 2024, he was arrested by IMPD for operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person and operating a vehicle without ever receiving a license after an accident damaged three parked vehicles.
According to DHS, Sosa-Gonzalez was transferred to ICE custody following that arrest but was released on bond one day after entering ICE custody under the Biden Administration.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said the current case demonstrates the consequences of releasing Sosa-Gonzalez from custody.
“This illegal alien, who had been released into our country by the Biden Administration, took the life of 33-year-old Tamara Renee Thomas because he was drunk behind the wheel,” Mullin said.
Mullin added that ICE had lodged the detainer with Indiana officials and called on authorities to cooperate with federal immigration officials.
“This disaster was completely avoidable, and were it not for the reckless open-border policies of the Biden Administration, this woman would still be alive,” Mullin said. “My thoughts and prayers are with Tamara’s family and friends.”
DHS said Sosa-Gonzalez illegally entered the United States through Texas in July 2021 and was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol. He was subsequently released into the country by the Biden Administration.
