Former U.S. Ambassador to Denmark Carla Sands is questioning Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s relationship with China, arguing that his ties to Beijing raise concerns about Canada’s increasingly strained relationship with the United States.
In a recent interview with Just The News, Sands said, “Let’s not forget, Mark Carney has had a lot of China relationships. Whether it’s China economic cooperation, I think he is closer to China than he is to the U.S.”
Sands also questioned whether China could be playing a role in the growing tensions between Ottawa and Washington. “Who knows if China is pressing Mark Carney to, you know, kind of stress the U.S. economy before the midterms,” she said.
Turning to Canada’s economic dependence on the United States, Sands argued that Carney’s approach could have serious consequences for the Canadian economy. “He has his own agenda, and it’s going to lead to economic crisis for Canada,” she said.

“Mark Carney is not a friend of the American people, but he’s also not a friend of the Canadian people,” she said. “He has his own agenda, and it’s going to lead to economic crisis for Canada. They need to trade with the U.S. because a lot of their goods go to the United States, where only about 5% of our goods come from Canada.”
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer blamed Canada for the collapse of trade negotiations, saying Ottawa walked away from a deal just as the two sides were preparing to finalize an agreement.
Greer said that after the United States and Canada were on the verge of reaching a deal, Canadian officials “wanted more,” ultimately derailing a deal.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on Monday said Canada was responsible for the collapse of trade deal negotiations last week, telling CNBC that Ottawa changed its demands at the eleventh hour.
“We progressed to a point Tuesday night where we had enough agreement among the parties to announce that we had … found the way to a deal,” Greer told CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”
“Then we set about to finalize it, and then in the last hours, I think there were things that the Canadians just — you know, they wanted more,” he said.
